This directory represents an important source of information on Important Bird Areas in the Lao PDR in an easily accessible format. It can be used in protected areas planning, regional and national land-use planning, education, training and environmental awareness. In addition, it can assist with planning for eco-tourism development in protected areas, by identifying sites of interest to visitors. Finally, by identifying important areas for bird conservation within protected areas, the directory will be a useful tool for developing protected area management plans that balance the needs of conservation with those of local communities who depend upon the natural resources of the protected areas.

The aim of this directory is
to present information on a set of internationally important sites for the conservation of birds in Lao P.D.R. The objectives of the directory are to:
  • Present data on international important sites for the conservation of birds in a standardised and clear format.
  • Assist Lao P.D.R. to meet its obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity by identifying candidate sites for inclusion within a representative system of protected areas.
  • Inform decision makers at local, national and international levels of the biodiversity values of sites, and to identify threats to biodiversity.
  • Identify clear, site-based priorities for conservation action, and to encourage government agencies, donors and NGOs to address them.
  • Provide a centralised source of information for use in education, training and environmental awareness.
The directory was produced by BirdLife International in Indochina, the Forest Inventory and Planning Division (FIPD) and the Division of Forest Resource Conservation (DFRC) and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) as an output of the Danida-funded project Improved conservation planning through institutional strengthening in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
