The national park is characterised by mountainous topography and supports a range of habitat types, including lowland and lower montane evergreen forest. At lower elevations, the natural forest has been extensively cleared and replaced by scrub and grassland. Be warned: Bach Ma is one of the rainiest places in Vietnam! Birding highlights : Annam Partridge, Silver Pheasant, Crested Argus, Red-collared Woodpecker, Red-vented Barbet, Brown Hornbill, Blyth’s Kingfisher, Coral-billed Ground Cuckoo and Short-tailed Scimitar Babbler Star rating : Bird fauna :Around 330 bird species have been recorded at Bach Ma National Park. Most notable is a recent record of the globally endangered Edwards \'s Pheasant close to the park. However, extensive loss of forest at low elevations means that it is unlikely that the park itself supports a significant population of this species, and the chances of seeing this bird at there are virtually nil. There are, however, plenty of other galliforms to attract birders, including Annam Partridge, Rufous-throated Partridge and the beli subspecies of Silver Pheasant. Bach Ma is most famous for its population of Crested Argus, although this species is more often heard than seen. In addition, the abundant and diverse forest avifauna of Bach Ma provides visiting birders opportunities to observe many other birds, such as Blyth’s Kingfisher, Brown Hornbill, Ratchet-tailed Treepie and Short-tailed Scimitar Babbler. Other features :Old French hill station, montane forest with rhododendrons. Transportation :Car or motorbike. Bach Ma National Park is 40 km from Hue city, which can be reached by train, bus or scheduled flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The park headquarters are located 3 km from Cau Hai town on National Highway 1A. It is easy to take a taxi or motorbike from Hue to the park headquarters, from where transport to the summit of Bach Ma, mountain 20 km away, can be arranged. Accommodation : Bach Ma National Park has six guesthouses. Two guesthouses, providing 10 rooms, are close to the park entrance, and four guesthouses (Bach Ma, Saola, Do Quyen and Kim Giao), with a total capacity of 26 rooms, are situated near the summit, at an altitude of 1,250 m asl. The summit area also hosts some privately managed hotels (Morin-Bach Ma, Tel.: +84 54-871199; Cam Tu, Tel.: +84 54-871802; Phong Lan, Tel.: +84 54-871801). In addition, there is a small campsite near the summit of Bach Ma, which is particularly popular with groups of students. Permission :Bach Ma is a well established tourism site. Entrance fees are charged and English-speaking guides can be hired. Birding routes :Bach Ma offers a range of trails for visitors. Each trail takes less than one day and many small trails can be explored from the road to the summit. Visitors can get details from the park visitor centre. Rhododendron Trail: begins at the summit road, about 2 km below the summit, and passes through montane forest to the top of a waterfall. From there, a steep path with 689 concrete steps leads to the bottom of the cliff, 300 m below. From the bottom, visitors can retrace their steps or continue to the Five Lakes Cascade Trail. Pheasant Trail: starts 5 km from the park entrance and leads through lowland evergreen forest to a series of waterfalls. As the name suggests, several galliform species can be found along this trail, including, with a lot of luck, the elusive Crested Argus. Brown Hornbill and White-winged Magpie are among the other interesting species that can be seen along the Pheasant Trail as well as the rare Blyth’s Kingfisher on the river. Good birding is also possible from the main road 2-3 km downhill from the park headquarters, past Khe Su village. This area, within the park’s buffer zone, is a known site for Annam Partridge. The surfaced road from the park headquarters to the summit can also yield many species, and the area around the summit guesthouses is particularly good for Long-tailed and Silver-breasted Broadbills, Sultan Tit and Short-tailed Scimitar Babbler. Sediment deposited by these rivers has formed a dynamic complex of intertidal flats, which, prior to the Second Indochina War, supported extensive areas of natural mangrove forest. However, most of the natural mangrove was destroyed by wartime spraying of defoliants, and the main habitat types at the site are now plantation mangrove and naturally recolonising mangrove. Birding highlights : Painted Stork and Asian Dowitcher. Star rating : éé Bird fauna :Although the dominant habitat type at Can Gio, plantation mangrove, is of relatively low importance for key bird species, the intertidal mudflats and sandflats at the site are important habitats for migratory waterbirds. Several rare waterbird species have been recorded at the site, including Spotted Greenshank, Asian Dowitcher, Spot-billed Pelican and Painted Stork. In addition, the globally endangered Black-faced Spoonbill has been recorded at the site, although it is not believed to regularly occur in significant numbers. The topography of the site is characterised by a flat plain in the west, and low, gentle hills in the east. The major vegetation types in the park are lowland semi-evergreen forest and lowland evergreen forest, although the park also supports extensive swamps and other wetlands. Birding highlights : Orange-necked Partridge, Germain \'s Peacock Pheasant, Siamese Fireback, Green Peafowl, Wreathed Hornbill, Lesser Adjutant, Woolly-necked Stork and Bar-bellied and Blue-rumped Pittas. Star rating : Bird fauna :Cat Tien supports one of the most intact lowland forest avifaunas in Vietnam. Most notably, there are confirmed records of 16 globally threatened and near-threatened bird species from the national park, the highest total for any protected area in Vietnam. Cat Tien supports all three restricted-range species that define the South Vietnamese Lowlands Endemic Bird Area: Orange-necked Partridge, Germain \'s Peacock Pheasant and Grey-faced Tit Babbler. Cat Tien is also one of the best sites in Vietnam to see Green Peafowl. Woodpeckers are well represented with 17 species recorded for the park. Other features :Large mammals, primates, Siamese Crocodile. Transportation :Car or motorbike. Cat Tien is about 3 hours by road from Ho Chi Minh City. The site is situated off National Highway 20 between Ho Chi Minh City and Da Lat. The turning to the park is at Milestone No.174 in Tan Phu town, and is signposted Cat Tien National Park - 24 km. Buses between Ho Chi Minh City and Da Lat, organised by Kim Café, tel: (84 88) 369 85, can stop at Tan Phu. Accommodation : A range of visitor accommodation is available at the park headquarters, and it is also possible to stay at Bau Sau, a ranger station in the heart of the park. An entrance fee is charged and English-speaking guides are available. Permission :No special permission is required to visit the Nam Cat Tien sector of the national park. Visitors must register at the park reception before crossing the Dong Nai River and entering the park. Birding routes : The Lagerstroemia and Ecological Trails, which begin near the park headquarters are good places to search for Germain’s Peacock Pheasant and pittas. The Dak Lua road may provide easier birding, especially early in the day when broadbills and Siamese Fireback can be seen. Jeeps can be rented (12 return) to the turn off to Bau Sau (Crocodile Lake) and Bau Chim (Bird Lake). Green Peafowl and waterbirds can be seen around these lakes, as well as Siamese Crocodile and, for the fortunate visitor, large mammals such as Gaur. Cat Ba is a large, limestone karst island, at the southern edge of Ha Long Bay, a Natural World Heritage Site. Birding highlights : Black Kite, White-bellied Sea Eagle and Pacific Reef Egret. Star rating : Bird fauna :Although the dominant habitat type at Can Gio, plantation mangrove, is of relatively low importance for key bird species, the intertidal mudflats and sandflats at the site are important habitats for migratory waterbirds. Several rare waterbird species have been recorded at the site, including Spotted Greenshank, Asian Dowitcher, Spot-billed Pelican and Painted Stork. In addition, the globally endangered Black-faced Spoonbill has been recorded at the site, although it is not believed to regularly occur in significant numbers. Cuc Phuong attracts large numbers of domestic tourists, so avoid weekends and public holidays. Star rating : Bird fauna :To date, over 300 species of bird have been recorded at Cuc Phuong National Park. Cuc Phuong supports an abundant forest bird community, including a good selection of woodpeckers, mynas, starlings, corvids and flycatchers. The site supports a number of South-East Asian endemics, including Red-vented Barbet, Bar-bellied Pitta and Limestone Wren Babbler. Other features :Endangered Primate Rescue Centre. Transportation :Car or motorbike. Cuc Phuong National Park is about 3 hours by road from Hanoi. Accommodation : Visitor accommodation is available at the park headquarters and inside the national park near the Bong ranger station. Large groups should book in advance, however. The forest is accessible on foot from both locations but some birding trails (such as the Cave of the Early Man, for Limestone Wren Babbler) are only accessible by car. Permission :Cuc Phuong is a well established tourism site. Entrance fees are charged and guides are available but not compulsory. Birding routes : Park Headquarters. There are a number of small, easy trails starting at the park headquarters, near the entrance gate. The longest of these leads to Mac lake and is good for White-winged Magpie. Bong ranger station: There are two main trails which start at Bong ranger station in the center of the park. The shorter loop trail to the ancient tree can sometimes yield Eared Pitta, Limestone Wren Babbler, Silver Pheasant, Grey Peacock Pheasant, Blue-rumped Pitta and Red-collared Woodpecker. The longer valley trail is good for Brown Hornbill, White-winged Magpie, Ratchet-tailed Treepie and, with luck, Bar-bellied Pitta. Star rating : Bird fauna :Da Lat Plateau Endemic Bird Area. The Dalat Plateau is one of the five endemic bird areas (EBAs) in Vietnam identified by BirdLife International. The vegetation is a mixture of coniferous (dominated by Pinus kesiya), montane evergreen and secondary forest. Three bird species, Collared Laughingthrush, Grey-crowned Crocias and Vietnamese Greenfinch, are only to be found within this EBA. The Dalat Plateau also has distinct subspecies of Spot-breasted Laughingthrush (considered by some authorities as a separate species: Orange-breasted Laughingthrush), Cutia, Rufous-backed and Black-headed Sibias, Blue-winged Minla, Grey-headed Parrotbill and Black-throated Sunbird. Other features :The cool climate, pine forests, lakes and waterfalls make Dalat a popular destination for Vietnamese tourists; weekends and, especially, public holidays can be very busy. By road, Da Lat is about six hours from Ho Chi Minh City. Accommodation : Da Lat is a major tourist destination, with a wide range of hotels, guesthouses and restaurants. Birding routes : Mount Lang Bian Only 12 km north of the city, Lang Bian mountain (also called \'Nui Ba \') is easily reached by motorbike taxi or car. A trail leads up the mountain through pine forest to remaining montane evergreen forest at the summit. Vietnamese Greenfinch can be found in the pines all the way along the trail, with Red Crossbill in the pines nearer the summit. The endemic Collared Laughingthrush can be found in the evergreen forest leading up to the summit. Other interesting species found here include Green Cochoa, White-cheeked Laughingthrush and Cutia. There is an entrance fee of VND 5,000. Note that the area can be very crowded at weekends. Tuyen Lam lake This man-made lake is just 3km outside of the city and is easily reached by motorbike or car but it is necessary to hire a boat to access the remnant forest at the far end of the lake where the best birding is to be found. There are some trails through the forest but they are poorly marked and hard to find. Yellow-billed Nuthatch, Black-hooded Laughingthrush, Grey-crowned Crocias and Vietnamese Greenfinch are among the local specialities. Ta Nung valley This site, around 15 km from Da Lat by motorbike or car, is one of the best sites for Grey-crowned Crocias. Indochinese Green Magpie, Yellow-billed Nuthatch, Black-hooded, White-cheeked and \'Orange-breasted \' Laughingthrushes, and Grey-headed Parrotbill can also be seen here. Deo Nui San This forested mountain pass on the main road Di Linh to Phan Thiet around 80 km from Da Lat is the most reliable site for \'Orange-breasted \' Laughingthrush. Blue and Rusty-naped Pittas, Green Cochoa, Black-hooded and White-cheeked Laughingthrushes, Indochinese Fulvetta and Grey-headed Parrotbill are also possible here. Recorded bird species richness in the Sa Pa area is higher than at any other site in Vietnam, with c. 350 species being recorded to date, although this may, in part, reflect the high levels of historical and recent survey effort. The avifauna of the area has strong Himalayan affinities, and includes many species that are known from few or no other sites in Vietnam, such as Gould \'s Shortwing, Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, Crested Finchbill and White-collared Yuhina. With a bit of searching, Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler, White-browed Laughingthrush and Ashy-throated and Vinous-throated Parrotbills can be found year-round, while, during the winter, the site is good for passerine migrants. Fan Si Pan mountain: All three trails to the summit of Fan Si Pan mountain (from Cat Cat village, Sin Chai village and Tram Ton pass) are good for montane species, particularly higher elevations. The trails are difficult going in places, and can be dangerous during bad weather. However it is necessary to get permission from the national park office to walk the path leading to Nung village. Accommodation and restaurants are available in Tam Dao town, which is within the national park. No guides or checklists are available. Birding routes : The route from Tam Dao town, which lies within the national park, to Rung Rinh has long been the favoured birding route (known as the \'Contour Trail \' or \'Water Tank Trail \') but is currently being upgraded into a road. Short-tailed Parrotbill and Blue-naped Pitta used to be seen along this route but is unclear whether this will continue to be the case, after the road construction is completed. Television Tower Trail: Walking up the 500 or so steps to the television tower above Tam Dao town, birders may encounter Grey Laughingthrush, Chestnut Bulbul, and, if they are fortunate, Green Cochoa. Be warned: this trail becomes very crowded with noisy students on weekends. The route to Nung village from behind the park headquarters is a good walk through forest, which may yield Ratchet-tailed Treepie and Black-throated Laughingthrush. Note that permission is required from the national park to walk this route. Other small trails around the foot of the mountain and along the road to Tam Dao town can turn up Spot-necked Babbler. The site is famous for the population of Sarus Cranes that inhabits the site in the dry season. In 1990s, hundreds of Cranes spent the dry season here. However, due to some inapproriate development in late 1990s and early 2000s, maximum counts of cranes fell dramatically to some 82 birds in the 2005 dry season. Other interesting wetland or wetland-dependent species that can be found at Tram Chim include Bengal Florican (very rare), Oriental Darter (common) and Asian Golden Weaver (common). The major habitats are estuaries, mangroves, mudflats, sandy flats and shrimp ponds. Birding highlights : Black-faced Spoonbill, Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Spotted Greenshank, Saunders \'s Gull and Asian Dowitcher. Star rating : Bird fauna :To date, more than 200 bird species have been recorded at Xuan Thuy. The site is the most important staging and wintering area for migratory waterbirds in the coastal zone of the Red River Delta. It regularly supports large numbers of commoner migratory waterbird species, including Black-tailed Godwit, Spotted Redshank and Eurasian Curlew. Many rare species can also be found at Xuan Thuy, including the largest wintering population of Black-faced Spoonbill in Vietnam, with around 60 birds each winter in recent years. Other rare species that regularly occur at the site include Saunders \'s Gull, Spotted Greenshank, Spoon-billed Sandpiper and Asian Dowitcher. In addition to its importance for waterbirds, Xuan Thuy is also an important migratory stop-over for non-waterbirds, with large numbers of passerines and cuckoos passing through the site during the spring and autumn migrations. During the summer months, small numbers of Painted Stork and Spot-billed Pelican occur as non-breeding visitors. Other features :Estuarine habitats and traditional aquaculture activities. Transportation :Car and boat. Xuan Thuy is about 150 km by road from Hanoi or three and half hours by car. The site is not well known and, for this reason, may be difficult to find. From the national park headquarters, the site can be visited by boat or by foot. It is important to take account of tide times when planning a trip to Xuan Thuy, as some of the best birdwatching areas can only be reached at high tide. Accommodation :At the moment, accommodation at Xuan Thuy is basic. The park has only one four-bed guestroom with no hot water or electricity. However, a new guesthouse with 10 standard rooms is currently under construction. In addition, there are two guesthouses in Ngo Dong town (20 km from Xuan Thuy) and a resort area in Quat Lam (40 km from Xuan Thuy), where there are many hotels and restaurants. Permission :An entrance fee system has not yet been established; visitors should contact the park authorities in advance to arrange permission. Both Vietnamese and foreign visitors can visit the park, providing they secure the approval of the park staff and the local border army station. Birding routes : As a staging and wintering site on the East Asian-Australian flyway, the best time to visit Xuan Thuy is September to April. In August and September, it is still possible to see non-breeding Painted Stork, as well as early migrants, such as Black-winged Stilt. Later, from October onwards, it relatively easy to find wintering Black-faced Spoonbills, particularly at their roost sites in the shrimp ponds. Visitors can ask for assistance from the national park staff, who know the site well, and can advise on places to look for particular species. Hiring a guide from the park is recommended. Birding routes: Visitors can travel by foot to some places of interest; others can only be reached by boat at high tide. Walking routes: Walking through the shrimp ponds on Con Ngan island, where the park headquarters is located, can be rewarding, especially at high tide when Black-faced Spoonbills and various gulls, ducks and waders come to roost and feed in the shrimp ponds. Boating routes: At high tide, boats can be chartered to reach the offshore mudflats and sandy flats, where Spoon-billed Sandpiper can be found among large flocks of waders. Saunders \'s Gull can also be found here during December and January, as well as other gulls and ducks. An alternative boat route involves visiting Con Xanh island, which is planted with Casuarina, which shelters migrating passerines, including pittas, and the outer edge of Con Ngan island, where waders, ducks and herons feed in the Tra river mouth. To the west, the site borders Cambodia. The site is characterised by a relatively flat, lowland landscape dominated by dry dipterocarp forest studded with seasonal pools. Semi-evergreen forest can also be found, along watercourses and on the few low-lying hills. Yok Don is bisected by the Srepok River, a major tributary of the Mekong River. The national park contains numerous small (and often seasonal) tributary streams of the Srepok River. Birding highlights : Green Peafowl, Lesser Adjutant, Woolly-necked Stork, woodpeckers and Mekong Wagtail. Star rating : Bird fauna :Yok Don National Park supports a diverse bird community, including a particularly rich dry dipterocarp forest avifauna. The large tracts of dry dipterocarp forest with seasonal pools are important for large waterbirds in particular. Yok Don is the only known site for the critically endangered Giant Ibis in Vietnam and supports the last known breeding Sarus Cranes in the country. Both species are very rare at the site, however, and the localities where they occur are off-limits to visitors. Yok Don supports a globally significant population of Green Peafowl, estimated to number at least 400 individuals. Larger permanent waterways support small but nationally important populations of White-winged Duck, Masked Finfoot, Lesser and Grey-headed Fish Eagles. Yok Don is also one of a handful of sites in Vietnam with recent records of White-rumped and Red-headed Vultures. However, most of these records have been from the western part of the park, close to the Cambodian border, which is closed to visitors. Other features :Dry dipterocarp forest, elephant rides.
